Vaduz Castle (Schloss Vaduz) stands on a rocky spur overlooking the capital city of Vaduz in the Principality of Liechtenstein. First built in the 12th century, the fortress has been home to the royal family since 1712 and has served as the official residence of the Liechtenstein princes for more than three centuries. Although its imposing keep, 12‑by‑13‑metre tower, and medieval chapel are architectural highlights, the castle remains a private home and is not open to the public. Visitors can admire the castle’s silhouette from the surrounding hills or enjoy panoramic views of the city and the Rhine Valley from its elevated position. The castle’s rich history—from surviving the Swabian War of 1499 to enduring extensive restorations in the early 20th century—makes it a symbol of the principality’s heritage and a landmark visible from almost every corner of Vaduz.
