Leutascher Geisterklamm
About
Nestled between the Tyrolean and Bavarian foothills, the Leutascher Geisterklamm (Spirit Gorge) is a dramatic limestone canyon that stretches nearly 1,650 metres along the Leutascher Ache. First opened to the public in 2006, the gorge offers a blend of spectacular natural scenery and child‑friendly interpretive trails. Visitors can stroll along steel walkways that hug the canyon walls, explore the wooden Waterfall Path, and pause to admire the roaring waterfall capped by a rainbow on a luminous summer day. The upper sections, protected by a steel mesh floor, remain free of charge, while a modest fee applies to the Waterfall Path only. Even in the winter, carefully maintained pathways keep the gorge open, though snow may temporarily close the innermost sections. For families and nature lovers, the canyon is an ideal day‑trip destination: the paths are suitable for children, and the winding routes offer plenty of spots to rest and take in panoramic views. The experience is part science tour, part adventure playground, and part peaceful retreat from the bustle of town. The gorge’s vertical drop of up to 75 metres and its unique alpine geology make it a must‑visit for hikers, photographers, and anyone eager to witness the raw beauty of the Eastern Limestone Alps. Guidelines for safety are clear: stay on marked walkways, keep a safe distance from the waterfalls, and avoid bringing pets or wheeled gear that could potentially damage the thin paths. Weather conditions vary with the seasons—from warm breezes in late spring to chilly mist in the fall—so visitors are encouraged to bring appropriate clothing and check the latest opening status before setting off.
