Erzabtei Stift St. Peter Salzburg
About
The St. Peter Abbey (Erzabtei Stift St. Peter) is the oldest continuously operating monastery in the German‑speaking world, founded in 696 by Saint Rupert on the site of an early Christian church. Nestled in the historic centre of Salzburg, it is a living testament to centuries of monastic life, with 21 monks and around 80 staff today. Visitors to the abbey are treated to a remarkable array of cultural treasures: the oldest library in Austria, holding more than 100,000 volumes including rare incunabula and manuscripts from the Middle Ages; a baroque‑styled abbey church crowned by the iconic Chapel of the Cross; and an extensive network of underground catacombs and a historic cemetery that offers guided tours of the burials of notable figures. The cloister’s peaceful gardens and the traditional Stiftskeller add a welcoming ambience for leisurely exploration. From the moment you step across the stone threshold, the abbey’s history, spiritual heritage and the majesty of its architecture invite introspection, learning and a sense of wonder for visitors of all ages.
