The FestungsBahn is Austria’s oldest funicular, operating since 1892 and still running today. In a quick 54‑second ride on a steep, 536‑meter climb, visitors are whisked up from the heart of Salzburg’s Old Town to the majestic Fortress Hohensalzburg. During the lift’s ten‑minute interval, up to 55 passengers can ride at once, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and surrounding mountains. The route is fully bar‑free on the way up and features a wheelchair lift that serves the bell tower and the fortress courtyard.
