Haus Des Meeres Zoo
About
The Haus des Meeres (House of the Sea) is Vienna’s unique aquarium and zoo, housed in a former World War II anti‑aircraft tower in Esterházypark. Since its opening in 1957, it has expanded into a 4 000 m² complex spanning 11 floors, home to more than 10 000 aquatic and terrestrial animals. The building’s striking concrete shell, a relic of wartime architecture, contrasts with lush indoor gardens, massive shark tanks, glass‑winged reptile and bird enclosures, and a rooftop restaurant offering panoramic views of the city. Visitors can explore themed galleries such as the “Shark Tank,” the “Aquarium,” and the observation deck on the 6th floor, all while learning about marine conservation, wildlife research, and the tower’s wartime history. Whether you’re fascinated by marine biology, intrigued by military history, or simply looking for family‑friendly entertainment in the heart of Vienna, the Haus des Meeres delivers an immersive experience that blends science, adventure, and stunning urban vistas.
