Museum of Military History
About
The Museum of Military History in Vienna, housed in the historic Arsenal building on Arsenalstraße, is the foremost institution in Austria dedicated to the country’s and Europe’s military past. Open daily from 9 am to 5 pm (except major holidays), the museum unfolds more than five hundred years of history through its eight thematic halls and an extensive outdoor Tank Garden. Visitors can walk into the Hall of Fame (Ruhmeshalle) to see frescoes by Karl von Blaas that depict crucial Austrian victories, and the Tower of the Arsenal’s iconic neo‑classical façade, designed by architect Theophil Hansen, provides a striking backdrop for the exhibits. The collections range from 16th‑century weapons and uniforms to modern aircraft, while the Tank Garden displays a succession of armored vehicles from the 1950s to present. The museum offers free admission on the first Sunday of each month and on Austrian National Day (October 26). Guided tours are available for families, students and history enthusiasts alike, and the venue also hosts special events such as children’s workshops and annual military-themed festivals. With its blend of art, architecture, and interactive displays, the Museum of Military History invites visitors of all ages to explore the story of the Austrian armed forces and its impact on European history.
