About
Schmetterlinghaus, also known as the Palmenhaus Burggarten, is Vienna’s iconic butterfly sanctuary tucked into the historic Burggarten near the Hofburg Palace. The 1905 Jugendstil greenhouse, spanning 180 m across and 28 m high, has been transformed into a lush tropical habitat where visitors can wander among free‑flying butterflies, walk along glass walkways, and explore vibrant plant collections. The butterfly house occupies the left wing of the Palmenhaus, while the right wing continues the traditional greenhouse function for the Austrian Federal Gardens. Guests of all ages can marvel at the striking architectural detailing, the vibrant flora and fauna, and the serene setting amid Vienna’s city center.
