The chronicle of the SophienalpeThe Sophienalpe was constructed by Emperor Franz Joseph for his mother, the Duchess Sophie, as a rural summer residence and was renovated at the end of the century 1900 as the "Reststop Inn and Dairy Farm Sophienalpe“. From that time it became a popular destination of the Viennese.Formerly the Sophienalpe, situated at one of the three Viennese hills, was reached by a cable railway built some 100 years ago. It was accessed from the Rieglerhütte by a lift system, the first of its kind in the world.The hotel was the meeting place of the officers with their ladies, the lovelorn youth, the citizens and nobility but, following a major blaze, almost all the buildings, including the glass palace, were destroyed.
