Volksgarten
About
Volksgarten is Vienna’s first public park, inaugurated in 1823, and spans five hectares in the city’s Innere Stadt district. The garden elegantly blends English‑style tree avenues with a French Baroque parterre, creating a verdant oasis in the heart of the historic inner city. A highlight is the expansive rose garden, boasting over 3,000 roses of more than 200 varieties that bloom throughout the season. Central to the park is the Theseus Temple, a faithful recreation of the ancient Temple of Hephaestus, showcasing the marble sculpture of Theseus slaying a centaur. The park is also adorned with iconic monuments, including the Grillparzer statue, the graceful Sisi memorial honoring Empress Elisabeth, and the youthful “Jugendlicher Athlet” sculpture. Adjacent to these are charming fountains such as the Triton and Nymph water feature, which add a splash of whimsy to the landscape. Walking along the central avenue toward the Hofburg, visitors can enjoy the Kaiserin‑Elisabeth monument and a variety of surrounding gardens and vistas. With its combination of historical monuments, horticultural beauty, and central location, Volksgarten offers a serene urban escape that is a must‑visit destination for all travelers to Vienna.
