The Port of Antwerp is a bustling maritime hub situated in the heart of Europe on the east bank of the Scheldt River. With a network of deep‑water channels, modern container terminals and world‑class dry cargo facilities, it is the second‑largest seaport in the region after Rotterdam, handling more than 15 million TEU of container traffic and close to 300 million tonnes of cargo each year. The port’s history dates back to the early 19th century, when Napoleon ordered the first lock that would eventually evolve into the extensive dock system we see today. Through the 20th century the port grew in size and capacity, passing through wartime challenges and eventually expanding into the massive right‑bank terminals of Europa and North Sea as well as the huge Deurganck Lock that opened the left‑bank docks to the North Sea. Today, the Port of Antwerp lies at the crossroads of road, rail, canal and river transport, providing direct access to the industrial heart of Belgium and the rest of continental Europe. It is not only a critical logistics centre but also a showcase of maritime engineering, the latest green initiatives such as hydrogen‑powered tugs, and a gateway for visitors to explore Antwerp’s vibrant waterfront, historic piers, and the visitor‑centric Lillo Port Centre, which offers guided tours of some of the port’s most iconic landmarks.
