About

The Antwerp Diamond District, often called the Diamond Quarter or the Square Mile, is a historic and bustling enclave in Antwerp’s city centre that remains the heartbeat of the global diamond trade. Covering roughly one square mile, the district is home to over 380 workshops, 1,500 companies, and 3,500 brokers and diamond cutters—all of which play essential roles in the cutting, polishing, and trading of rough and polished diamonds. While the bulk of the gem‑cutting industry has migrated to lower‑cost centers elsewhere, Antwerp still handles about 84 % of the world’s rough diamonds and more than $16 billion in polished diamonds annually. The district’s rich heritage dates back to the 15th century, and its factories, exchanges, and boutiques have been the stage for some of the most significant events in jewellery history, including the infamous 2003 Antwerp Diamond Heist. Today, visitors can explore the world‑renowned Antwerp World Diamond Centre, the Diamond Club of Antwerp, and the Beurs voor Diamanthandel, as well as a range of boutique stores and corporate offices. Coronated by its historic streets such as De Keyserlei, the district is a must‑visit for anyone fascinated by the glittering world of gems, the art of cutting, or the vibrant business that thrives beneath the city’s skyline. While the neighborhood is not an attraction with set opening times—shops and offices operate on typical commercial schedules—no business is conducted on Saturdays. The district’s dynamic blend of commerce, history, and craft makes it a unique window into the gemstone industry.
