Chateau de La Roche-en-Ardenne
About
The Château Féodal de La Roche‑en‑Ardenne is a magnificent ruin perched high above the loop of the Ourthe River, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the Ardennes valley. Built originally in the 9th century and expanded over the following centuries, the castle’s mighty stone walls, towers and gatehouse stand as a testament to medieval military architecture. Visitors wander through the shadowy halls, exploring the original chapel, watchtowers and the remains of the great hall, all while learning about the castle’s tumultuous history from Neolithic occupation to its role in the War of the Spanish Succession and the Battle of the Bulge. In addition to its rich historical narrative, the site hosts a range of family‑friendly events, including nightly “phantom” performances of Countess Berthe’s ghost, the medieval “Week‑end Médival” with costumed performances, falconry exhibitions, and guided tours with local food tastings. The castle’s open hours are 13:00‑16:00 Monday‑Friday, 11:00‑16:30 Saturday and Sunday, with the last visit permitted 30 minutes before closing. The castle welcomes visitors of all ages but is not fully wheelchair‑accessible. Admission is reasonably priced with 8.50 € for adults and 6.50 € for children aged 3‑12, and guided tours and tasting packages are available for an additional fee.
