Stadhuis
About
The Stadhuis (City Hall) of Bruges, a late‑Gothic monument dating from 1376‑1421, has been the seat of the city council for over 600 years. Its magnificent Gothic hall boasts an impressive vaulted ceiling and 20th‑century murals that chronicle Bruges’ history, while the adjacent historic chamber showcases the city’s maritime heritage through an interactive presentation about the lost Zwin ports and original art and archaeological objects. Visitors can also admire life‑size portraits of Bruges’ rulers on the ground floor and explore the evolving city’s history at the Burg Square. Open from 10:00 to 18:00 daily, admission costs €8 for adults, with reduced prices for seniors, youth and children, and free entry for holders of the Musea Brugge Card. The building is fully accessible, with an adapted lift, accessible paths and an independently accessible entrance. The city hall’s architecture, featuring a dramatic façade and ornate bay window sets, influenced many other municipal buildings in the region. Its interior, restored in the late 19th and early 20th centuries by Louis Delacour and Jean‑Baptiste Bethune, includes a richly decorated Gothic Hall and murals depicting Bruges’ past. The Stadhuis remains a must‑visit attraction for history enthusiasts, architecture lovers, and families seeking to explore one of Belgium’s most iconic landmarks.
