National Basilica of the Sacred Heart
About
The National Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Koekelberg, Brussels, is a monumental example of Art‑Deco architecture blended with neo‑Byzantine elements. Covering an impressive footprint of 3,500 seats, the basilica offers visitors a striking interior replete with stained‑glass windows, a towering emerald dome, and a collection of religious art spanning six centuries. At the heart of the complex lies a panoramic platform that provides a sweeping 360° view of Brussels and the surrounding Flemish Brabant region. Visitors can access the panorama either by public lift or by the newly installed glass‑cage elevator that accommodates all mobility levels. The panoramic gallery, now open year‑round, costs €8 per person or €6 for groups of six or more. In addition to the main worship space, the basilica hosts a variety of museums, including the Museum of the Black Sisters, which showcases works from the 16th to the 19th century, and the Modern Religious Art Museum featuring contemporary religious paintings. Guided tours, available in French, Dutch, English and German, cost €75 for groups up to 25 people, with an optional evening premium of €100. The basilica also houses a small boutique offering souvenirs and a small shop with operating hours from 9:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 16:30. A culturally rich destination, the Basilica appeals to families, history enthusiasts and anyone seeking a contemplative experience amid architectural grandeur.
