Blegny-Mine
About
Blegny‑Mine, situated in Blegny between Liège and Maastricht, is one of only four authentic coal mines in Europe that has been preserved as a living industrial heritage site. Visitors descend 30‑60 metres below the surface in the original shaft to walk through the underground galleries, observe the machinery that once pumped coal, and learn about the miners’ daily life through a guided tour of the mine and the wash‑and‑sorting plant. A short train ride then takes guests around the slag‑heap biotope, where the environmental transformation of the site is showcased. The interactive museum exhibits and immersive audio‑visual presentations make Blegny‑Mine a compelling destination for history enthusiasts, families, and anyone fascinated by Wallonia’s industrial past. In 2012 Blegny‑Mine gained UNESCO World Heritage status as part of the Four Major Mining Sites of Wallonia, underscoring its importance as a witness to Belgium’s coal‑mining heritage.
