About

The cafe, which the bulgarian poet, publicist and politician Petko Rachov Slaveykov regularly visited in 1881-1883 while living in the city of Plovdiv, was famous as a favorite place of Plovdiv bohemians. It is located on the small square "Vazrazhdane" at the southeastern foot of "Dzhambaz" hill. For two years, every morning, Slaveykov stopped by for a chat while drinking his favorite coffee – the so-called "Turkish coffee" made on sand – and to eat white jam. Inside the cafe there is a preserved ocak (obsolete from turkish for "fireplace"), where the coffee was prepared, as well as the alafrangas (decorative niches in the interior of the Bulgarian Revival house), which were restored about a century ago. In the past it was called "Slaveykov Cafe", today it is Cafe-Club Starinno.
