Aladzha Monastery
About
Aladzha Monastery, nestled in a 25‑metre high cliff on the Franga Plateau, is a medieval Orthodox cave complex that captivates visitors with its dramatic setting and historic frescoes. Located about 17 km north of Varna and just 3 km from the Golden Sands beach resort, the site lies within a protected forest that borders the Golden Sands Nature Park. The monastery was founded in the 12th century and remained active until the early 18th century, serving as a haven for hesychast monks of the Second Bulgarian Empire. Today, the grotto is one of the most popular attractions in the region. Walk through winding corridors carved into the limestone cliff to witness the legacy of early Christian art, including medieval frescoes and mosaics. In summer, visitors can experience a themed light show inside the cave, adding a magical dimension to the historic site. The surrounding natural landscape, with its pine forests and panoramic views, makes a hiking trip a perfect complement to the cultural exploration. Whether you are a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a unique escape from the city, Aladzha Monastery offers a serene retreat that blends cultural heritage with breathtaking scenery.
