Vrbnik
About
Vrbnik is a picturesque village and municipality on the east coast of Croatia’s popular island of Krk. Set atop a limestone outcrop about 50 metres above the Adriatic Sea, the town offers sweeping views of the Vinodol Channel and the mainland towns of Crikvenica and Novi Vinodolski. Historically a fortified settlement, Vrbnik’s medieval walls still frame a charming centre that has been home to a thriving Glagolitic literary tradition for centuries. Visitors can wander through narrow streets, most famously Ulica Klančić – reputedly the world’s narrowest street – and see historic chapels such as the Gothic Chapel of the Rosary and the Chapel of St. John inside the Parish Church of the Assumption. The town is also renowned for its local white wine, Žlahtina, produced from indigenous grapes cultivated along the cliffs. In addition to its cultural heritage, Vrbnik boasts a wealth of local museums and libraries. The Vitezić library houses a collection of ancient manuscripts, while the parish church preserves valuable Glagolitic manuscripts. The surrounding landscape, with terraced vineyards and a quiet harbour, offers a tranquil retreat for leisurely strolls, wine tastings and photography enthusiasts. A small ferry service from the harbour connects Vrbnik with the mainland, making day trips to nearby coastal towns easy to arrange. For history lovers, Vrbnik’s ancient roots and preserved medieval architecture provide an intimate glimpse into the region’s past. Wine aficionados will appreciate tasting the unique, dry white varietal that carries the island’s heritage. The town’s friendly atmosphere, coupled with the serene sea views and historical allure, makes it an ideal stop for families and solo travelers alike who seek a quiet, culturally rich escape. Whether exploring the narrow lanes by foot, sipping a glass of local wine, or walking along the scenic cliffs overlooking the Adriatic, Vrbnik delivers a memorable island experience that showcases the blend of natural beauty and historic charm characteristic of Krk.
