Dubrovnik Sea Aquarium
About
Nestled within the historic walls of St. Ivan Fortress, the Dubrovnik Sea Aquarium offers a captivating dive into the Adriatic’s marine biodiversity. The facility, part of the University of Dubrovnik’s Institute for Marine and Coastal Research, is housed in a restored 17th‑century section of the fortress overlooking the city’s iconic Old Town. The aquarium spans thirteen interconnected tanks that together hold 115 m³ of crystal‑clear seawater, continuously circulating the Adriatic’s natural marine life. Visitors can stroll along the main walkway and witness a mesmerizing display of colorful reef fish, shimmering lobsters, and the occasional curious octopus. Highlights include a glass‑bottom “sea floor” tunnel, a dedicated shark exhibit, and an interactive butterfly reef that showcases the delicate balance between marine and terrestrial ecosystems. Beyond the living exhibits, the aquarium’s educational halls offer hands‑on displays and informative panels about the Mediterranean’s unique ecosystems, conservation efforts, and the Institute’s research on coastal waters. School groups and marine‑science enthusiasts enjoy guided tours that connect the living displays to ongoing scientific studies. The aquarium is conveniently located near the city’s central pedestrian streets, making it easy to combine a visit with a leisurely walk through Dubrovnik’s historic streets, a nearby botanical garden on Lokrum Island, and the city’s famed harbour views.
