Trsteno Arboretum
About
Trsteno Arboretum is a living museum of Mediterranean horticulture situated in the small town of Trsteno, just south of Dubrovnik. The grounds were founded in the late 15th century by the noble Gucetic‑Gozze family, who welcomed plants and seeds from sailors’ voyages to create a stunning blend of native Dalmatian and exotic flora. The arboretum today covers more than 25 hectares of meticulously landscaped lawns, winding paths, and historic waterworks, and it is managed by the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Visitors can stroll beneath two venerable Oriental Plane trees that date back over five centuries, explore the ancient aqueduct—still in use by the estate’s fountain—and wander through the oldest Renaissance garden in Croatia, laid out in 1502. The grounds also offer a quiet retreat from the bustling city life of Dubrovnik, with panoramic views of the Adriatic and surrounding countryside. In addition to its botanical treasures, the site gained modern fame as the backdrop for the “Red Keep” gardens in seasons three and four of *Game of Thrones*, attracting a new generation of fans eager to walk the same paths as the fictional Crawling‑King’s realm. The arboretum is open daily, free of charge, and offers an ideal destination for history buffs, nature lovers, photographers, and families looking for a peaceful escape.
