Biokovo Mountain
About
Biokovo is the second‑highest mountain range in Croatia, stretching along the Dalmatian coast in the Adriatic Sea. Located between the Cetina and Neretva rivers, the range reaches its summit at 1,762 m (Sveti Jure) and is characterized by a classic karst landscape of limestone, dolomites, breccias, and flysch. The mountain hosts dozens of caves, a network of ridge peaks such as Sveti Ilija, and an array of endemic plant and animal species. The 196 km² Biokovo Nature Park protects this unique environment and offers a range of hiking trails that vary from easy coastal walks to strenuous summit climbs. Hikers can traverse the popular King’s Path, explore the canyon of the Neretva, and experience the silent beauty of the karst voids. A major attraction is the Biokovo Nature Park Visitor Center in downtown Makarska, where visitors can learn about the park’s biodiversity, geological history, and local folklore. The center is equipped with exhibits, maps, and a small café, making it a convenient stop before embarking on a day of exploration. At its highest point, Sveti Jure hosts a powerful FM and DVB‑T transmitter, but the square‑dressed summit also offers breathtaking 360‑degree views of the Adriatic Sea, the nearby town of Makarska, and on clear days, distant Italian coastlines.
