Greeting to the Sun
About
The Greeting to the Sun, officially the Monument to the Sun, is a striking 22‑metre diameter solar sculpture perched at the western tip of the Zadar Peninsula, overlooking the Adriatic Sea. Designed by Croatian architect Nikola Bašić, it is composed of 300 multi‑layered glass panels arranged in concentric circles that represent the Sun and the surrounding planets. Beneath the glass lies a network of photovoltaic modules that not only power the monument but also feed its dynamic lighting system, which turns on at dusk to create a mesmerizing light show that shifts throughout the day. In addition to its scientific inspiration, the monument serves as a cultural calendar: the ring’s perimeter is inscribed with the names of local saints and their feast days, accompanied by solar data such as declination and daylight length for each date. Visitors can stroll along the stone‑paved waterfront, gaze at the gleaming “sun” and its planetary companions, and enjoy the gentle illumination that transforms the site into a celestial playground by night. As part of Zadar’s vibrant waterfront, the monument is readily accessible to all and is typically free to enter, making it a must‑visit landmark for both casual strollers and astronomy enthusiasts alike. This iconic installation blends cutting‑edge solar technology with artistic expression, offering a unique perspective on the sun’s place in the cosmos while anchoring the urban identity of Zadar.
