Funicular Railway
About
The Zagreb Funicular is a charming, city‑run attraction that connects the flat Ilica street in Donji Grad with the historic ramp of Strossmayerovo šetalište in Gornji Grad. Launched in 1890, it is one of the smallest public‑transport funiculars in the world, yet it remains a beloved daily commute for residents and a picturesque stop for visitors. The two cars, each holding 28 passengers, shuttle up and down the 30‑meter incline every ten minutes from 6:30 a.m. until midnight, offering a 64‑second ride that looks out over Zagreb’s old town and its iconic landmarks. Passengers enjoy a brief yet thrilling experience that blends the nostalgic charm of a historic transport system with modern electric service. The line’s proximity to major attractions—such as the Zagreb Cathedral, St. Mark’s Church, and the bustling Dolac Market—makes it a convenient shortcut for tourists exploring the city. While the funicular itself has a short travel time, the journey is often treated as part of a larger stroll through the picturesque streets of Zagreb. With the funicular undergoing extensive renovation from January 2025 to March 2026, visitors are advised to use the alternative transport options suggested by the city, such as bus lines 105 and 150, while the line remains temporarily out of service. Once the upgrades are complete, the funicular will boast improved accessibility, new air‑conditioned cabins, and a cleaner, safer ride for all passengers.
