Buffavento Castle
About
Buffavento Castle, perched 3,100 feet above the Kyrenia Mountains, is the highest—and most remote—of North Cyprus’s famed hilltop fortresses. Accessible via a winding four‑mile drive with dramatic views of the Mediterranean and the city of Leyko, the ascent tests hikers’ resolve with a narrow stone staircase that climbs 75 feet to the upper level. The castle rests on two levels, the lower ward still hosting the castle’s original gates and rooms, while the upper ward offers a vaulted, water‑proof chamber and a final terrace where the panoramic vista spans the sea, the plains and the peaks of the surrounding range. Free admission allows all visitors to enjoy the historic architecture, the layered history of Lusignan‑era fortifications, and the challenge of the climb. A day spent exploring the two tiers, taking in the sweeping scenery, and learning about the castle’s medieval past will typically last around 2½ hours, especially when pauses are taken to rest, photograph, and appreciate the natural flora that flourishes on the cliffside. Best visited in Spring, when the weather is mild and the plant life is in full bloom, Buffavento offers both a physical adventure and a quiet, historical retreat for travelers seeking a unique experience beyond the bustling coastal towns.
