About
An excursion into the history of 'Banh Mi' A crispy and perfectly baked until golden brown baguette stuffed with homemade pâté, juicy meat and blend of fresh vegetables is a very popular kind of street food in Vietnam. Street vendors, who are selling these delicious Banh Mi sandwiches can be found in almost every corner of this bustling country. The tradition of Vietnamese stuffed baguettes dates back to the time of French colonial rule, since it traveled along with French soldiers to Southeast Asia. Later, the Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches have been created by combining sophisticated elements of two different culture and gastronomy - the modern West and the exotic East. The French usually enjoy their baguettes simply with butter or pâté. Over period of time, the Vietnamese added tasty filling that contains ingredients typical for Vietnamese cuisine - juicy meat that comes in many variants, cucumber slices or a mixture of pickled vegetables (radish, carrot), fragrant cilantro (also known as coriander) and hot chilli sauce. The very basic element of Banh Mi is obviously a light baguette from wheat flour that is cripsy on the outside and moist inside. Surprisingly, we can find baguettes that are baked from rice flour in some Vietnamese Bageterie. The whole world learned about the long existence of this delicacy after year 1975, when the Vietnam War ended and the huge wave of Vietnamese immigrants have brought this unique piece of motherland cuisine to the distant America, Europe or Australia. Today, Vietnamese Banh Mi sandwiches often appear in many gastronomic magazines presented as a very tasty and healthy food.
