Cafe Montmartre
About
In 1912 the singer and cabaretier, Josef Waltner, opened a business in Řetězová street which he named Montmartre in honour of the famous Parisian cabarets. Montmartre had been frequented by the Bohemian elite of actors, writers and artists. Among the biggest hotheads was the legendary Czech writer Jaroslav Hašek, who was repeatedly denied access to Montmartre for his frequent misconduct. The well-known reporter Egon Erwin Kisch performed modern dances here and the place was also popular among Prague’s German writers, from Franz Werfel and Max Brod to Franz Kafka. Montmartre’s fame however came to a halt during the First World War. Café Montmartre opened on this authentic location in 1999 and shortly after became a popular spot for local students, artists and tourists. We hope that you’ll find here the magic of times long passed, enjoy a pleasant place to relax or perhaps even experience the wild history of Montmartre.
