Designmuseum Danmark
About
Designmuseum Danmark, formerly known as the Danish Museum of Art & Design, is Denmark’s national showcase for design and decorative arts. Housed in the historic former Frederiks Hospital on Bredgade 68, the museum’s architecture is an intriguing blend of 18th‑century brickwork and contemporary additions, creating an inviting backdrop for its eclectic collections. The museum presents a sweeping narrative of Danish design from the 19th century to the present, featuring iconic designers such as Arne Jacobsen, Jacob Jensen and Kaare Klint. Visitors can explore exhibitions covering furniture, glass, textiles, porcelain, silver and industrial design, each arranged within thematic galleries that highlight both functional artistry and aesthetic innovation. In addition to its permanent collection, Designmuseum Danmark hosts the region’s largest library dedicated to decorative arts—offering 75 journals and 1,000 research volumes. The reading room is open to the public Tuesday through Friday from 11:00 to 17:00 and serves as a hub for lectures, research, and inspiration for designers and historians alike. The museum’s approachable layout, combined with its rich historical narrative, makes it a compelling destination for design enthusiasts, families, and cultural travelers looking to delve into Denmark’s creative legacy.
