Eesti Vabaohumuuseum
About
The Estonian Open Air Museum, located on Vabaõhumuuseumi tee 12 outside Tallinn, spans 72 hectares and brings Estonia’s rural heritage to life in a living‑history setting. The museum’s 74 reconstructions range from 18th‑century farmhouses to a modern prefab house, and they are grouped into thematic zones – Western, Northern, Southern Estonia and the Islands – that showcase traditional agriculture, industry and everyday life. Visitors can stroll the “Open Air Village”, explore the oldest wooden structure, the Sutlepa Chapel, and the 1960s collective farm apartment known as the Kolhoos House. In addition to the permanent displays, the museum offers a new family‑friendly permanent exhibition called “Every Little Step Counts”, horse‑drawn carriage rides daily from 11:00 to 15:45, and a free audio‑guide app called NUMU that provides an interactive audio guide and a playful orientation game for children. Special events such as the Christmas Village, the Midsummer’s Eve, and seasonal festivals in the museum park add extra layers of cultural experience. Open weekdays and weekends from 10:00 to 19:00 (the park extends to 19:00), with a free audio‑app and the opportunity to walk the historic village or enjoy a carriage ride, makes this museum a must‑visit for families, history enthusiasts, educators, and anyone curious about Estonia’s rural life.
