Kumu Art Museum
About
Kumu Art Museum (Kumu), located on Weizenbergi Street 34 (Valge 1) in Tallinn, is the flagship building of the Art Museum of Estonia and the country’s largest museum of visual art. Since its opening on 17 February 2006, the museum has showcased Estonia’s artistic heritage from the 18th century to the present day, with permanent galleries dedicated to classical, modern, and contemporary Estonian art. Its striking contemporary architecture, designed by Finnish architect Pekka Vapaavuori, blends limestone slopes with glass and steel, creating a dramatic setting that attracts art lovers and architecture enthusiasts alike. Beyond the permanent collections, Kumu hosts a constantly evolving programme of temporary exhibitions, educational workshops, guided tours, and public programmes that bring contemporary European and world art to Estonian audiences. Visitors can explore the dedicated Classical and Contemporary wings, the main auditorium, and a café offering scenic views of the museum’s atrium and surrounding park. The museum prides itself on accessibility and offers free admission for all visitors, making it an inclusive cultural destination for families, students, and scholars. Tickets for the main galleries are free; however, guided tours and special program entries may incur modest fees. These tickets are available only up to 30 minutes before closing time, ensuring that visitors can make the most of their visit. The best times to immerse yourself in Kumu’s collections are during the spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) months, when the weather is mild and crowds are smaller. Kumu is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with extended evening hours on Thursdays until 8 p.m., and is closed on Mondays.
