Town Hall Pharmacy
About
The Town Hall Pharmacy, located at Raekoja plats 11 in Tallinn’s medieval heart, is the world’s oldest continuously operating pharmacy. Built in the 15th century, the shop preserves its original layout and displays a remarkable collection of medieval apothecary artefacts, manuscripts and early medicines. Visitors can walk through the original apothecary’s rooms, explore a small museum of historical instruments, and taste traditional delicacies such as the famed claret and marzipan that have been sold here for centuries. The pharmacy is both a living laboratory and a living museum. It offers hands‑on workshops and guided tours that allow guests to learn about medieval medicine, brew traditional herbal teas, and even try their hand at making marzipan or sampling claret. The combined experience of historic preservation and interactive learning makes it a unique attraction for people of all ages. Opening hours are daily from 10 AM to 6 PM (with a lunch break from 1:30 PM to 2 PM). The museum entry is free, although groups of 10 or more can purchase a guided tour at €2 per person. The pharmacy also hosts special events, themed workshops for children and school groups, and seasonal festivals celebrating Estonian apothecary heritage. For those planning a visit, welcoming crowds tend to be lighter in spring and fall, making these seasons ideal for a relaxed exploration of the pharmacy’s storied past and cultural offerings.
