About
Senate Square, the heart of Helsinki, is a beautifully landscaped neoclassical plaza that has served as the city’s civic arena since the early 19th century. The square is surrounded on three sides by some of Helsinki’s most iconic buildings—Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, and the main building of the University of Helsinki—while the statue of Emperor Alexander II dominates its centre. In addition to its architectural splendour, the square hosts a variety of cultural events year‑round, from open‑air concerts and art exhibitions to the annual Christmas market and winter festivals.
