About
Uspenski Cathedral, the grandest Eastern Orthodox church in Finland, stands on the Katajanokka peninsula overlooking Helsinki’s bustling harbor. Designed in the 1860s by Russian architect Aleksey Gornostayev and finished by Ivan Varnek, the cathedral showcases soaring Russian Revival style with its massive golden dome, intricately carved wood, and richly decorated interiors. The building is home to an exquisite iconostasis painted by Pavel S. Shiltsov, as well as a crypt chapel dedicated to the martyr‑saint Alexander Hotovitzky. Visitors can admire the cathedral’s lavish mosaics, gilded icons, and impressive dome‑vault interior, while hearing the reverent chants of the Orthodox liturgy.
