The Arktikum museum and science centre in Rovaniemi offers an immersive journey into the Arctic’s natural world, history, and culture. Opened in 1992 on Finland’s 75th independence anniversary, the striking crescent‑shaped building hosts two permanent exhibitions: the Arctic Center, exploring life in the north, and the Regional Museum of Lapland, documenting local heritage. Its signature 172‑metre glass corridor, bisected by a 30‑metre wide highway, guides visitors from the bright foyer into a subterranean gallery that simulates the sheltering of Arctic animals against harsh winters. Visitors also enjoy a café, a library, and temporary exhibitions that showcase contemporary Arctic art and science.
