Cathedrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne
About
The Cathedral of Sainte Marie de Bayonne is a stunning example of Gothic architecture that has stood watch over the city for centuries. Set within the historic heart of Bayonne, the cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a spiritual centre for the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Visitors can explore the cloister, the richly decorated chapels, and the Nave, all while enjoying the serene atmosphere that has drawn pilgrims and tourists alike. Outside the sacred services, the cathedral welcomes visitors Monday through Saturday from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm and again from 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm, and on Sundays from 8:15 am to 12:15 pm and 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The site is free to enter, though certain guided tours and the Grand Organ restoration fund welcome donations. The cathedral’s current restoration project aims to revive the historic organ, ensuring that future generations can experience its magnificent sound and the cathedral’s cultural legacy continues to resonate through Bayonne’s community.
