Les Gorges du Fier
About
Les Gorges du Fier is a dramatic canyon on the Fier River, just 10 km west of Annecy in the Haute‑Savoie region of France. The 252‑metre long walkway lets visitors glide above the river, offering sweeping views of the steep gorge walls and the swirling river below. The gorge is a living laboratory of geology, featuring giant lime‐stone ‘Marmites de Géants’, sandstone joints, and the intriguing ‘Mer des Rochers’ – a maze of limestone blocks. Beyond its natural beauty, the Gorges du Fier is steeped in legends and history. A special exhibition called the “Clairière des Curieux” showcases the geological and cultural stories of the area, while a nearby pavilion tells tales of local folklore, from ancient dragons to the storied Petit Page. With open hours from 9:30 am to 6:15 pm (extended to 7:15 pm in June‑August) between March 15 and October 15, the sight is accessible year‑round – dogs are not allowed, but strollers are mandatory for untethered children. Whether you’re a geology enthusiast, a family on a day trip, or simply looking for a scenic walk, Les Gorges du Fier offers an unforgettable blend of natural wonder and cultural intrigue.
