Désert des Agriates
About
The Agriates Desert, or the Agriates, stretches across northern Corsica, covering roughly 15 000 hectares between the Mediterranean Sea to the north, the Serra di Tenda mountains to the south, and several inland valleys. It is a largely uninhabited landscape of rugged granite plains, rolling dunes, and about 37 km of pristine, virgin coastline, protected since 1979 by the Conservatoire du littoral. Visitors can explore dramatic beaches such as Saleccia, Loto, and Ghignu, the austere Ostí́coni dunes, and historic Genoese towers (Mortella, Ostriconi, and Fornali). The sentier des douaniers—a coastal trail following the old customs‑officers' path—offers a scenic walk along the desert’s most remote stretches. The area is a haven for nature lovers, hikers, photographers, and history enthusiasts. Whether trekking the dune system, spotting centuries‑old towers, or enjoying a quiet hour on one of its untouched beaches, visitors experience a rare blend of wilderness and cultural heritage unique to Corsica.
