Musée Gustave Courbet
About
The Musée Gustave Courbet in Ornans offers a comprehensive journey into the life and legacy of one of France’s most influential realist painters. Housed in the historic Hôtel Hébert – the first dedicated museum of Courbet – the 1,000‑square‑meter complex now occupies three adjoining buildings (Hôtel Hébert, Hôtel de Champerreux, and Maison Borel) and boasts 16 exhibition rooms displaying over 400 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and personal documents that chronicle the artist’s career and the cultural landscape of the Doubs region. The contemporary gift shops, cafés, and the Courbet Family Farm in Flagey provide additional cultural venues, including exhibitions, workshops, and a charming bookshop on a terrace overlooking a floral garden. Visitors can also explore the surrounding “Pays de Courbet”, featuring walking trails along the Loue River, the source of the Loue, and historic sites such as St. Laurent’s Church and the “Little Venice” of Ornans. The museum’s striking glass walls command panoramic views of the town and its cliffs, making it a highlight for art lovers and history buffs alike.
