About

The Grotte du Pech‑Merle is a French hillside cave located near Cabrerets in the Lot department of the Occitanie region, about 32 kilometres east of Cahors. It is one of the few prehistoric cave‑art sites in France that remains open to the general public, offering visitors a spectacular view of Paleolithic paintings that date back as far as 25,000 years ago. The cave’s two levels span roughly 2 km, of which approximately 1,200 m are open to the public, and include chambers painted with majestic mammoths, dappled horses, glaucous woolly rhinoceroses, and handprints that are still preserved in vitreous pigment. Visitors are guided through the galleries in small groups to protect the delicate artwork from humidity and carbon‑dioxide damage, and the site includes a familiar walk‑through route that takes roughly an hour and a half. The centre of prehistory at Pech‑Merle also hosts temporary exhibitions, research projects, and educational programs, making it a must‑visit destination for art historians, palaeontologists and cultural tourists alike.
