Chateau et Remparts de la Cite de Carcassonne
About
The Château et Remparts de la Cité de Carcassonne is a medieval citadel that has become one of France’s most iconic heritage sites. Nestled on a hill overlooking the town of Carcassonne, the fortress boasts a double‑walled rampart spanning nearly 3 kilometres and 52 towers, a richly restored château called the Château Comtal, and a museum of masonry. Visitors can stroll the walkways along the ancient walls, cross the Pont‑Neuf bridge, and wander through the inner courtyards that reveal the evolution of French fortification from the Gallo‑Roman period to the 13th‑century crusader era. The chateau itself has been dramatically rehabilitated by 19th‑century architect Eugène Viollet‑Le‑Duc, who replaced original roofs with slate and restored the citadel’s medieval splendor. Time‑informed tourists can enjoy self‑guided audio tours, guided discovery tours, or a specially curated conference on Carcassonne’s 2,500‑year history. In addition to the fortress, the site offers free admission for children under 18 and for 18‑25‑year‑old EU citizens, while general admission is €19 per adult – a price that drops to €13 after 4 p.m. during the summer season. With early‑morning construction of a game‑book for children and a range of tours that last roughly an hour, the Cité is a superb destination for families, history enthusiasts, couples, and solo travellers seeking an immersive, medieval experience.
