About

Nestled in a green setting in the heart of the Vendée Breton Marshes, the Charles Milcendeau Museum showcases the work of a painter who was deeply attached to his region and equally passionate about travel and discovering other cultures. An expert in portraiture, the penetrating gaze of his works takes visitors into the intimate lives of 19th-century figures. The Museum offers a poetic interlude in the heart of a verdant and relaxing garden. The latter is occupied by the artist's home and the museum building housing his works, designed by architect Jean-Claude Pondevie. On the Bois-Durand property, listed as a Historic Monument and labeled "Maisons des Illustres", the house of Charles Milcendeau immerses you in the very heart of the intimacy of the artist and his wife Marguerite. Mediation activities are offered through guided tours, workshops for children and “unusual nights” evenings.
