About

The Koïfhus, formerly the customs house of Colmar, stands as a striking testament to the city’s medieval heritage. Perched at the intersection of the historic Grand Rue and Rue des Marchands, the masonry building – whose construction was completed in 1480 – once served as a warehouse and tax office for goods entering and leaving the city. Over the centuries, the Koïfhus has played many roles: the council chambers for the Decapole (the federation of ten imperial cities of Alsace), a theatre in the 19th century, the first office of the discount bank in 1848, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry from 1870 to 1930. Although the 19th‑century condition prompted fears of demolition, the building was restored from 1895‑98, and a final refurbishment in 2002 repaired its sandstone balustrade. Today the historic structure hosts a variety of public events, exhibitions, and cultural activities. With free admission, the Koïfhus remains a must‑visit destination for anyone interested in Colmar’s architectural splendor and the rich tapestry of its civic history.
