Observatoire de Merelle
About
The Observatoire de Merelle, perched above the turquoise waters of Lake Gérardmer, is a slender 19th‑century tower that offers visitors a sweeping 360° panorama of the surrounding Vosges mountains and the crystal lake below. Reaching the top requires a moderate climb of 85 stone steps, a manageable challenge for most hikers. The path to the tower is narrow and can accommodate only four people at a time, which preserves a quiet atmosphere but also means that the site can become crowded during weekends and school holidays. While the tower is free to visit, motorised access is prohibited from June 1 to September 30; visitors must walk (or cycle) up the trail, departing from the nearby parking area. For the best experience, early‑morning or late‑evening visits are recommended to avoid the peak crowds and to capture the lake’s shimmering light.
