About

Fort Boyard is an iconic sea fortress perched on a low rocky islet in the Pertuis d’Antioche straits between the Île‑d’Aix and the Île d’Oléron on France’s west coast. Built on the banks of a shoal, the fort was conceived as part of a line of coastal defenses intended to protect the vital harbour of Rochefort. Work on the structure began under Napoleon in the early 1800s and was completed in 1857, but the fortress was largely obsolete by the time it entered service. After decades of abandonment and use as a military prison, Fort Boyard gained international fame in 1990 as the filming location for the long‑running French television game show of the same name. The dramatic setting—stone walls rising 16 metres high, a central courtyard, and a surrounding lagoon—has made it a popular tourist attraction. In 1996 the French government invested in major restoration work, and the fort has since been fully cleaned and stabilized. In 2020 a €36.6 million restoration project was announced, aiming to preserve the structure for future visitors and to ensure access is possible by 2028. Today visitors reach the fort by boat from nearby towns such as Fouras, and enjoy guided tours that highlight its military history and its role as a television landmark. The site offers panoramic views of the Atlantic and the surrounding archipelago, making it a favourite stop for history lovers, families and adventure seekers alike." }
