The Grande Dune du Pilat, the tallest sand dune in Europe, rises to 101 m (330 ft) above sea level, stretches 2.9 km (1.8 mi) in length, and reaches a width of 616 m (2,020 ft) at its base. Located in the coastal town of Pyla‑sur‑Mer, it offers sweeping panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, the Bassin d’Arcachon, and the surrounding pine forests that form part of the protected Grand Site. Visitors can enjoy free access to the dune’s natural trails and observation points, although parking is available at a low cost (15 € for a car, 30 € for a motorhome) and can be purchased on site or online. Accessibility is a priority: the reception area, visitor cabins, and most pathways are fully accessible for people with reduced mobility. Guided audio tours in French and English, braille signage, and audio descriptions of the dune’s history are provided for visitors with visual impairments. The dune’s dynamic nature is celebrated through educational displays, a visitor centre, and seasonal guided walks, especially in spring and autumn when crowds are lighter and the weather is mild. The dune is under active stewardship by a public syndicate that manages conservation, research, and visitor education.
