About

Château de Talmont stands on a steep hill overlooking the River Lay, in the peaceful commune of Talmont‑Saint‑Hilaire in western France’s Pays de la Loire region. Founded in the 10th century, the castle was continually fortified, reaching its current form in the 12th century with majestic Norman stonework, a formidable moat, and a towering 12‑storey keep. The fortress survived the wars of the Middle Ages, the reigns of Henry IV and Louis VIII, and the French Revolution, preserving layers of history for visitors to explore. Today the castle functions as a museum and public heritage site, welcoming tourists during the open season. Inside, visitors can stroll through a small ethnographic exhibition on the ground floor and climb the upper levels for panoramic views of the surrounding lowlands. Recognised as a protected monument historique, the Château de Talmont offers an intimate glimpse into medieval military architecture and the everyday life of France’s past.
