About

Hill 60 is a solemn World War I battlefield memorial situated in the Zwarteleen area of Zillebeke, just south of the historic town of Ieper (Ypres), Belgium. Created in the 1850s from spoil left by a railway embankment, the hill rose to about 60 m above sea level, offering a strategic observation point during the war. The site is now a war‑grave memorial park maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, featuring original concrete bunkers, massive mine craters, and a series of memorials to the British, Australian and German forces that fought above it. Visitors can wander the open, uneven grasslands and explore the preserved dungeons and bunkers, but should exercise caution on the terrain. There are no admission charges and the memorial is open daily, but it is recommended to dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear as the ground can be rough and the area is misty for much of the year. The site is a powerful reminder of the brutal trench warfare that took place in the Ypres Salient and is a must‑visit for those interested in World War I history.
