About

The Château du Pin was built in the 13th century by Jean de Chalon. You enter the castle courtyard through the gatehouse of an enormous keep. 22 m high under the machicolations, it has walls whose thickness varies between 2 and 2.80 m. The interior of the keep includes 5 levels which are accessed from the central courtyard through a door located at the height of the 1st floor. The room on the 2nd floor, with its monumental fireplace and its adjoining chapel, was reserved for the lordly family. During the French conquest of 1674, an order to dismantle the castle led to the demolition of part of the curtain wall : it is possible that the intervention of the abbot of Baume-les-Messieurs, Jean de Watteville, prevented this complete destruction. Major restoration work was undertaken from 1923 to 1933 : reconstruction of the enclosure and the dwelling, raising of towers and restoration of the keep. The visit includes the interior courtyard, the keep and the tour of the ramparts.
