About

The Saint-Charles church is located near the Vieux-Port, in the very linear rue Grignan (n°64). Behind its facade of a very sober classicism, come and discover this church in the neo-baroque style unique in our city. You will be struck by the high altar, the main work of this church, made in 1891 by Jules Cantini: four majestic columns of red marble surmounted by a spectacular crowning of gilded and painted wood. It was in Saint-Charles that young Marcel Pagnol was baptized in April 1898. It was also on the territory of the parish that Blessed Frédéric Ozanam died in 1853. A commemorative plaque placed near the baptismal font recalls this event. The church is still assigned to Catholic worship. Another particularity is that the liturgy is celebrated there in the extraordinary form of the Roman rite (see timetables on the parish website). The heritage of the Church is also highlighted through Gregorian chant and polyphonies.
