Mucem
About
The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisations (MuCEM) is Marseille’s flagship cultural hub, housed in an iconic glass‑and‑concrete cube overlooking the Old Port. Open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM with free admission, the museum offers visitors a panoramic view of the city and a hands‑on encounter with centuries of Mediterranean history. MuCEM’s collections span from Neolithic pottery to contemporary art, curated around themes that trace the cultural exchanges between Europe, North Africa and the Levant. Highlights include the permanent “Mediterranean” pavilion, the “Fort Saint‑Jean” façade, and the 15,000 m² underground auditorium, all designed by architects Rudy Ricciotti and Roland Carta. Interactive displays and guided audio tours help visitors navigate the 250,000‑piece archive, making it accessible to families, history enthusiasts and solo travellers. Beyond the exhibitions, the museum provides a range of visitor services. The on‑site library‑shop showcases regional authors and antiquarian prints, while four Mediterranean‑centric restaurant spaces, including the flagship Café du Fort and the rooftop Bouillant, cater to lunch, coffee breaks and sunset dining. The museum’s café and event space also host regular talks, concerts and cultural workshops, ensuring that every visit is both educational and memorable.
