Site Memorial du Camp des Milles
About
The Site‑Mémorial du Camp des Milles is a powerful monument situated in the village of Les Milles near Aix‑en‑Provence, France. Originally a tile factory turned internment camp in 1939, it was used during the Vichy era to detain artists, intellectuals, and Jewish refugees, many of whom were later deported to Auschwitz. In 1993 the site was transformed into a public memorial, overseen by the Fondation du Camp des Milles and supported by the UNESCO Chair for Education for Citizenship, Human Sciences and Shared Memories. The memorial offers a three‑part guided experience that explores the historical, emotional, and reflective dimensions of the Holocaust. Visitors traverse preserved internment areas, hear audiovisual narratives of survivors, and engage with interactive exhibits that explain the psychological mechanisms of genocide and the importance of civic responsibility. Temporary exhibitions, such as "Mémoire et fraternité. Joann Sfar – La vie dessinée", and permanent displays by Serge Klarsfeld bring contemporary art and documentation to life. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (last ticket at 5:30 p.m.), the memorial charges a €14 adult admission fee (reduced €11 for eligible residents, €40 for family passes). Guided tours cost €6, and smaller event tickets are available separately. The site is also free for certain groups, including children under nine, RSA beneficiaries, veterans, teachers, and press card holders.
